The Innovation Fund (IF) is a sub-fund within the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)’s Ocean Stewardship Fund (OSF), which aims to help increase the number of sustainable fisheries around the world. The IF is open to academic institutions, independent researchers, NGOs and fisheries around the world. The MSC* wants to see better and safer working practices for at-sea observers, who play a vital role in legal and sustainable fisheries management. The MSC is aware of the risks that observers face as they carry out their work and is keen to support other organisations working on solutions that can improve observer safety. This year, the IF has been dedicated to support research into best practice approaches and improvements regarding observer safety and electronic monitoring. Proposers are invited to submit an Expression of Interest by 23:59 on 9 November 2020. Shortlisted proposers will be notified by 23 November and then invited to submit a full proposal of their project by 23:59 GMT on 29 January 2021.
*The MSC ecolabel (‘blue fish’ label) and certification program recognises and rewards sustainable fishing practices and is helping create a more sustainable seafood market.
