The University of Leeds is a vibrant, multidisciplinary institution with extensive teaching and research programmes in ecology, evolution, biomedical sciences, climate, and conservation. The School of Biology seeks to recruit a highly quantitative researcher to a project exploring coral reef biodiversity linkages in Indonesia. 

This position is funded by a NERC Wallacea grant to Prof D Smith, Dr A Dumbrell (both University of Essex), Prof J Jompa (Hasanuddin University), G Limmon (Pattimura University), and Dr M Beger (Leeds), entitled “Gradients of marine biodiversity and linkages with eDNA across the Wallacea Region”. The project aims to evaluate how species interaction networks for coral reef taxa respond to human stressors. We will employ a dual approach to collecting field data, and evaluate how networks produced through eDNA data compare to those constructed with ecological survey data. This will allow us to interpret eDNA data obtained across Wallacea to gain the fullest understanding of its reef biodiversity, and in doing so evaluate the use of eDNA approaches as a tool to map biodiversity processes relevant to management.

The role will entail the organisation, management and participation in five major coral reef field surveys in Wallacea, together with Indonesian and UK partners. Then, you will characterise ecological species interaction networks with both visual census data and data collected with eDNA methods and publish the study in high-impact peer-reviewed papers and other outlets targeted towards Indonesian management and policy audiences. 

You should have a PhD (or be close to completion) in quantitative marine ecology or a relevant area of research, and have expertise in coral reef ecology, ecological modelling, big data manipulation, and have an excellent publication record commensurate with career stage. It is also important that you have solid coral reef field experience with fish identification skills and are SCUBA qualified to PADI DM level or equivalent. You will possess the ability to work collaboratively with partners from diverse backgrounds.
