This position plays an important role in facilitating the public process in the development of Alaska's fish and game regulations, with a focus on Board of Game regulations. It is a unique position that carries out a variety of duties which include maintaining the Board of Game, Board of Fisheries, and advisory committee websites, serving as regional coordinator for fish and game advisory committees, staffing 3-5 board meetings around the state to operate the digital sound system and provide meeting materials via the website. This position provides an opportunity to travel to all regions of the state attending board meetings and occasionally advisory committee meetings. The position is located in the Juneau Headquarters office of the Boards Support Section.
The key responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Carrying out a full range of professional publication responsibilities including developing, editing, proofing, and producing Board of Game proposal books, board workbooks, and other published materials such as newsletters, flyers, and informational materials on the board and advisory committee process;
  • Responsible for the creation, design, layout, and maintaining of Boards Support web pages including addressing future needs;
  • Staffing lengthy board meetings around the state including meeting set up and breakdown at venues;
  • Maintaining a permanent record of all Board of Game meeting materials including audio recordings;
  • Responsible for distributing public notices of regulatory and other meetings which includes preparing/sending notices for print, mail and email notification, posting to the state's online public notice page, and utilizing/updating the Boards Support databases;
  • Responsible for set up and operation of sophisticated sound board equipment and providing live streaming and digital audio recording of board meetings;
  • Serving as regional coordinator to arrange meetings for 5-10 of the Southeast Region local fish and game advisory committees;
  • Serving as point of contact to guide the public and Southeast advisory committees through the fish and game regulatory process and procedures of the boards;
  • Troubleshooting software and hardware problems, installing new software, and updating existing software;
  • Communicating clearly and effectively (both written and oral) with employees, the public, advisory committee members, and board members to provide helpful public service; and
  • Providing back up duties for the Board of Fisheries Publications Specialist II position including publications, web postings, and attending meetings.

The ideal candidate will possess some or all of the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience (All of these traits must be documented in your cover letter and applicant profile. If you do not have experience with one or more of the traits listed below, simply say so):

  • Maintenance and development of program website using software to plan, design, write, format, and post publications and documents;
  • Editing, proofing, and layout of web pages;
  • Working knowledge of desktop publishing software (such as Adobe Photoshop, Acrobat, and InDesign) and advanced techniques in Microsoft Word to layout, format, and edit to develop informational materials and board materials;
  • Working independently on multiple tasks with firm deadlines;
  • Experience editing, proofreading, and fact-checking written material for proper grammar, punctuation, readability, and clarity;
  • Experience in troubleshooting problems with hardware and software on sound and recording systems, and installing new hardware and software on existing systems;
  • Ability to communicate effectively (written and oral) with vendors, members of the public, and staff;
  • Experience with coordinating meetings for groups of people;
  • Experience with digital sound recording programs and setting up, breaking down, and operating sound systems at live events; and
  • Strong organizational skills.

Special Note: 
This position requires extensive in-state travel (mostly during the fall and winter) to attend 3-5 board meetings that may be as long as two weeks at a time, often requiring the ability to maintain focus and attention to detail for extended hours. Overtime is required during board meetings and for meeting preparation. Transporting equipment to and from board meetings is also necessary.


Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college;
One year of entry level professional experience performing writing, editing, design and layout of written materials. Experience is comparable to the Publications Specialist I classification with the State of Alaska.
