Oceanography has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Coordinator.  The purpose of this position is to serve as the research coordinator of Simons Collaborative Marine Atlas Project (Simons CMAP), a grant-funded cross-disciplinary project designed to integrate, visualize, and share large-scale ocean-related data sets with the scientific community and the general public. The successful candidate will have a key role in project management, planning, and resource allocation by operating in close liaison with the project leaders, developers, and end-users.

Research Coordinator (E S 9) The purpose of this position is to serve as the research coordinator of Simons Collaborative Marine Atlas Project (Simons CMAP), a grant-funded cross-disciplinary project designed to integrate, visualize, and share large-scale ocean-related data sets with the scientific community and the general public. The successful candidate will have a key role in project management, planning, and resource allocation by operating in close liaison with the project leaders, developers, and end-users.

A significant fraction of CMAP active users is composed of research scholars conducting advanced studies using data sets and tools shared by the CMAP project. Using domain expertise, the research coordinator will ensure the capture and prioritization of the feedback and needs of CMAP users. In turn, these prioritized needs will be communicated with the developer team. The successful candidate manages the internal sub-projects by allocating appropriate implementation time and tracking their progress, and develops meaningful metrics to quantify the overall project progress. Finally, it is critical for this position to stay up-to-date with the latest developments within the landscape of oceanography data services and to ensure that Simons CMAP is present at the prominent field conferences. The successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding of key audiences, the avenues available to reach them, and be agile in crafting compelling messages derived from Simons CMAP functionalities to address audience needs. In summary, the ideal candidate is an excellent relationship manager and problem solver with deep knowledge of earth science, particularly oceanography. This person will help ensure that major objectives are clear and are achieved on time, with flexibility and high quality.

The general duty of this position is to serve as the research coordinator for Simons CMAP by providing management and direction across the Simons CMAP team and communicating with UW collaborators, non-UW collaborators, and non-profit entities.  This person will help to maximize the scientific impact of the program by ensuring the effective execution of complex multi-team projects that allow developers and researchers to agilely help meet the mission of Simons CMAP.

The specific responsibilities fall into the following four broad categories:

•Management: Develop, implement, and manage systems that enhance internal communication and consistency in workstreams. Cultivate strong relationships and facilitate communication with a wide range of staff, students, and faculty and external collaborators and partners to create, shape, and translate ideas and vision into workstreams, and to ensure efficient completion of deliverables. Develop and maintain project schedules according to product requirements and monitor the project progress and coordinate work-plans and deadlines.  Compile appropriate quantitative metrics to provide meaningful feedback for product developers. This requires an understanding of how the different developers and collaborators operate and the ability to identify the best ways for them to work with one another to achieve identified goals.

•Command of material: Stay up-to-date with the latest scientific and technical advancements within the ocean data services domains. Identify and establish professional relationships with leads at relevant oceanography repositories/databases. This requires an ability to cultivate strong relationships and facilitate communication with a wide range of staff and external partners to create, shape, and translate ideas and vision into workstreams.

•Communication: Ensure Simons CMAP has an active presence at relevant conferences, workshops and various teaching venues. Contribute to content developments for Simons CMAP presentations including slides, infographics, and data visualizations. This requires demonstrated oral and written skills.

•Produce formal project progress reports and contribute to formulating the funding documentation. This requires the ability to monitor progress against key milestones and to summarize progress. Perform additional duties as assigned that fall within the reasonable scope of this position as a member of the Simons CMAP team.

Requirements:
 

  • Masters in Oceanography or other Earth Science discipline AND three years of experience related to the position description.
     
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication. Ability to work independently and in a multi-disciplinary team. Past experience at professional appointments in academic settings.

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.

    Desired experience:
    Experience with Atlassian (JIRA, Trello, Confluence) for managing software projects and teams.
