Waitt Institute Sets up Emergency Relief Fund for Humanitarian Aid

“Barbuda is barely habitable.” – Gaston Browne, Prime Minister of Antigua & Barbuda

San Diego/California – In response to the devastation wrought by Hurricane Irma on Barbuda, a partner community of the San Diego-based Waitt Institute, the Institute has established the “Barbuda Restoration & Conservation Trust.” With an initial grant of $100,000 USD from the Waitt Foundation, The Trust is set up through the International Community Foundation to accept US tax-deductible donations from grantmakers and the public.

[Punta Gorda, Belize] (July 20, 2017) Marine park staff from Honduras, Belize and The Bahamas are meeting in Punta Gorda, Belize to assess sustainable financing mechanisms for protected area management, and to share innovative financing solutions between Roatan Marine Park in Honduras and Port Honduras Marine Reserve in Belize.

Punta Gorda, July 31, 2017 – Representatives from eight marine protected area organisations came together in Belize to develop strategic plans in support of marine protected area law enforcement.  

“With our national partners and with our counterparts from three Caribbean countries we’re looking at the future of our marine protected area enforcement programs,” explained Mrs. Celia Mahung, Executive Director of the Toledo Institute for Development and Environment, TIDE Belize.
